BRAZIL: Violence in congress adds to land debate

On 6 June more than 1,000 landless protesters linked to the Movimento de Liberação dos Sem-Terra (MLST) invaded the national congress building in Brasí­lia. The peasants vandalised the building and reached the antechamber of the assembly room, fighting security and threatening congressmen. They were eventually stopped by the police in the most violent incident to have ever taken place in the Brazilian capital.
